Abstract

1,149,180. Abrasive tools. MINNESOTA MINING & MFG. CO. 22 Sept., 1966 [23 Sept., 1965], No. 42407/66. Heading B3D. A coated abrasive flap wheel comprises an annulus of radially disposed flaps of coated abrasive sheet material, said annulus being adapted for mounting on a shaft between a pair of side plates, there being provided, substantially only at and adjacent the radially outer lateral area where said annulus is to be contacted by said side plates, a resilient elastomer which penetrates between said flaps to form therewith a continuous ring when said annulus is positioned between side plates and subjected to axial compression, as in mounting. A flap wheel comprises coated abrasive flaps 11 bound together at their inner ends by a relatively hard tough resinous material 16. Each flap has notches, these aligning to form grooves 13, 13a receiving flanges 14, 14a on side plates 12, 12a. In the area immediately at and radially outwardly adjacent to the grooves 13, 13a is elastomeric material 17, 17a. The elastomeric material preferably has a Shore A hardness of 20-50; it may be a room temperature vulcanized silicone or a polyurethane. The elastomeric material may be poured into the grooves 13, 13a or may be a preformed ring.
