Abstract

1,148,928. Quenching. OLIN MATHIESON CHEMICAL CORP. Nov. 3, 1966, No.49365/66. Heading C7N. A process for cooling articles of aluminium, copper or alloys based on these metals, which have a surface temperature of at least 700‹ F, comprises spraying substantially the whole surface thereof with an aqueous high velocity jet of liquid from a distance of 6-24 ins. the jet being sprayed at a pressure of 150-600 p.s.i. at a velocity of 100-300 feet per second and the coolant flow-rate being at least 20 gallons per minute per square foot of area of impact. The preferred coolant is water and cooling rates achieved are at least 150‹F. per minute.
