Abstract
1,148,561. Draughting machines. P. H. NEWMAN. Sept. 25, 1967 [March 11, 1967], No.11497/67. Heading G1X. A device enabling a straight-edge 1 to be moved parallel to itself in precise incremented steps over a drawing board, comprises two wheels 5 on a rotatable spindle 4, the wheels projecting through the straight-edge 1 to engage the drawing, a grooved collar 11 on the spindle 4 having precisely spaced axial grooves engaged by spring-loaded detents 6, 8, so that rotation of the spindle 4 will be controlled by the detents 6, 8 and each incremented movement will be accompanied by an audible click. The grooves on the collar 11 are arranged so that each groove is engaged the two detents 6 and certain grooves are extended and are engaged by the detent 8 so as to indicate layer increments of movement of the straight-edge 1 e. g. “ inch. The two detents 6 are in fact arranged such that with are detent engaged in a groove the other is situated on the crest between two adjacent grooves. In this way the incremented movement of the straight-edge may be half that determined by the spacing of the grooves on the collar 11. Catches are provided for each detent 6, 8 to enable them to be rendered ineffective if desired. A knurled collar 9 with a spring catch 10 is rotatably mounted on the spindle 4 and the catch 10 may be set to engage with any of the grooves on the collar 11. The collar 9 is graduated and by setting it relative to a zero position counting of the incremental steps of movement of the straight-edge 1 can be facilitated. Also described is a draughting machine having a straight-edge which can be moved parallel to itself over a drawing board, the straight-edge being provided with detents engaging toothed racks at the edges of the board and by means of which incremented movement of the stright-edge may be effected. As described movement of the straightedge is normally controlled by slide blocks moving in channel members also disposed at the board edges.
