Abstract

A blank for making a tubular sheet metal can body having longitudinally extending lap side seam has a solid organic coating an marginal surface portions which portions are adapted) tol overlap and be secured together to provide the lap side seam, the coating comprising the reaction product obtained by heating together a polyvinyl acetal resin, 1,2-epoxide resin, a phenol-aldehyde resin, and a phosphoric acid addition salt of an aliphatic amine having 3-15 carbon atoms, and an adhesive comprising a linear superpolyamide having an intrinsic viscosity of at least 0.4 adhered to the coating on one of the marginal surface portions. The organic coating may cover the entire surface of both sides of the blank. The blank may have aluminium, low carbon steel, with or without an external plating of aluminium, chromium, nickel or tin, as the metal component. The polyvinyl acetal resin may be polyvinyl formal, acetal, butyral, preferably having a polyvinyl alcohol content of 6 to 22%. The epoxide resin may be in a complex polymeric epoxy hydroxy ether resuiting from the catalyzed reaction of a polyhydric phenol with an excess of an epoxide e.g. epihalohydrins and alkylene oxides, having an epoxide equivalent of 425 to 6,000. The phenol-aldehyde resin may be a methylolphenol resin which is a methylol phenyl ether in which the hydrogen of the hydroxyl group attached to the phenylgroup is substituted by an alkyl, alkenyl or cyclo-alkyl group or by an aralkyl or aralkenyl group, and halogenated derivatives thereof e.g. 1-allyloxy-2, 4,6-trimethylol benzene which may contain the mono- and dimethylol phenyl allylether. The phosphoric acid salts may be ortho, meta and pyrophosphate salts of primary, secondary, and tertiary aliphatic amines. The coating may be applied as a solution or dispersion and afterwards baked. Printing or other decorative coatings may be applied to the organic coating. The superpolyamide adhesive may be polypentamethylene, polyhexamethylene, polydecamethylene, poly-m-phenylene sebacamide, polyhexamethylene, polydecamethylene adipamide, 6-amina-caproic acid polymers, 7-amino-heptanoic acid polymers, 11-amino undecanoic acid polymers, 12-amino-stearic acid polymers. The blank is formed into an open-ended tubular can body by wrapping around a mandrel, heating the adhesive to a semi-fluid, tacky condition, pressing the coated lower surface of the opposite blank margin into contact with the tacky adhesive, and chilling the bonded side seam. Both the upper surface of one margin and the lower surface of the other margin may carry the adhesive such that when the blank is rolled into tubular configuration there will 'be an adhesive-to-adhesive seal in the lap side seam rather than an adhesive to coating seam.
