Abstract

1,148,344. Filtering molten metals. FOSECO INTERNATIONAL Ltd. 22 Jan., 1968 [24 Jan., 1967], No. 3585/67. Heading B1D. Inclusions are removed from molten metal by passing it through a bed of a granular metal halide whose melting point is higher than that of the metal. Preferred metals are aluminium and magnesium; preferably the bed is 52% CaF 2 and 48% MgF 2 , with a grain size of 3-6 mm. The process may be carried out in a preheated cast iron cylinder (4) with a perforated bottom (5), the bed always being immersed in the melt (the Figure, not shown).
