[Also in Division C7] An electrolytic cell 1, 2 of the mercury cathode type has anodes 3 supported by a structure 4a, 4b which can be raised or lowered by a system 12 to 20 of shafts and gears, the shaft 12 being driven by an electric or pneumatic motor (not shown) associated with a controller which is responsive to voltage or current variations in the cell, whereby the distance between the cathode and the anodes is maintained at an optimum value by automatic adjustment of the anodes. The arrangement is such that the cell voltage, the cell current, the current distribution within a single cell, or the current distribution to separate cells may automatically be kept constant. A handwheel 10, operating a screw mechanism 6, 7, 8, 9, enables individual anodes to be manually adjusted.
