Novel anti-diabetically effective compounds (including salts thereof) of the general formula wherein A is an unsubstituted or substituted alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, aralkyl, aryloxyalkyl, arylmercaptoalkyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkenyl, alkoxy, alkenyloxy, aralkyloxy, cycloalkoxy, cycloalkylalkoxy, cycloalkenyloxy or cycloalkenylalkoxy radical or a radical of the general formula (V)(W)N- in which V and W, which may be the same or different, are hydrogen atoms or unsubstituted or substituted alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl radicals or, together with the nitrogen atom to which they are attached comprise an unsubstituted or substituted, saturated heterocyclic ring; R 1 is a hydrogen atom or a C 1-3 alkyl or aralkyl radical; X is a straight or branched-chain C 1-4 hydrocarbon fragment; and R 2 is an alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkoxyalkyl or alkylmercaptoalkyl radical, are prepared: (a) by reacting a compound of the general formula (n is 0, 1 or 2) with a 2-amino-pyrimidine substituted by the group -SR 2 at the 5-position and, if necessary, oxidizing the product; (b) by reacting a guanidine, with a compound of the general formula (Z and Z<SP>1</SP>, which may be the same or different, are hydrogen atoms or alkoxy radicals), or with a functional derivative thereof, whereafter, when the pyrimidines obtained are hydroxylated in the 4- and/or 6-positions these are converted into the corresponding halogen compounds and then reductively dehalogenated; (c) by acylating a compound of the general formula (Pm signifies the pyrimidine nucleus); or (d) by reacting a sulphonamide, with a pyrimidine substituted at the 5-position by the group -SR 2 and at the 2-position by an ester group (includes halo) or a trialkyl-ammonium group. 4 - (# - Aminoethyl) - N - {5 - ethylmercaptopyrimidinyl - (2)} - benzenesulphonamide is obtained by saponification of the corresponding 4-(#-acetylaminoethyl)-compound; the 5-propylmercapto- and 5-isobutylmercapto-compounds are similarly obtained whereas the 5-isopropylmercapto-compound is obtained from the corresponding 4-(#-ethoxycarbonylaminoethyl)-compound.
