Abstract

1,148,190. Terpolymer blend. COATES BROS. & CO. Ltd. 23 Jan., 1968 [8 Feb., 1967], No. 5979/67. Heading C3P. [Also in Division B2] A composition comprises (A) a copolymer of (i) one or more monoethylenically unsaturated monomers which do not incorporate a reactive group other than the double bond, (ii) amonoethylenically unsaturated monomer containing at least one carboxyl group, (iii) a monoethylenically unsaturated compound containing at least one hydroxyl group and (B) a copolymer obtained by treating with formaldehyde and an alkanol a copolymer of (a) one or more monoethylenically unsaturated compounds which do not incorporate a reactive group other than the double bond, (b) a monoethylenically unsaturated monomer containing at least one carboxyl group, and (c) acrylamide or methacrylamide. In the examples copolymers (A) are copolymers of (i) styrene, methyl methacrylate, butyl acrylate, 2-ethyl-hexyl-acrylate, (ii) hydroxypropyl or ethyl methacrylate, hydroxyethyl acrylate, trimethylolpropane monoalkyl ether, and (iii) acrylic and methacrylic acids, while copolymers (B) are copolymers of (a) styrene, butyl or ethyl acrylate, dioctyl maleate (b) acrylic or methacrylic acids, and (c) acrylamide, reacted with butanol and paraformaldehyde. Solutions of these copolymers in xylene, n-butanol or a commercial aromatic solvent are mixed with titanium dioxide and may be spray-coated and the coatings cured by heat.
