Abstract
1,147,989. Electro-polishing stainless steel alloys. ELECTROPOL Ltd. July 29, 1966 [July 30, 1965; Sept.10, 1965], Nos. 32788/65 and 38759/65. Heading C7B. An electrolyte solution for use in the electropolishing of stainless steel alloys consists of (a) more than 50% by weight of either phosphoric acid, or a mixture of phosphoric and sulphuric acids in a maximum weight ratio of sulphuric to phosphoric acid of 4:1, (b) from 5 to 35% by weight of water and (c) an additive which comprises (i) a saturated aliphatic monocarboxylic acid which is formic acid or which contains at least 4 carbon atoms and/or (ii) an ester having a total of from 2 to 12 carbon atoms and being an ester of a saturated aliphatic monocarboxylic acid and a monohydric alcohol, the additive being present in a concentration sufficient to enhance the polish obtainable in such electrolyte. The stainless steel alloys contain at least 15% of alloyed constituents including Cr and optionally Ni. The alloys may be austenitic. Specified additives for the electrolyte are HCOOH, the n- and iso-acids with a total of 4 or 5 C atoms, vinyl acetate, n-propyl formate, butyl formate, ethyl acetate, and butyl acetate. The additive may form 0À3% by weight or more of the electrolyte solution. The electrolyte solution may also contain wetting agents (no specific agent being mentioned) and other previously employed additives, e.g. polyethylene glycol of molecular weight 600. It may contain an anti-foaming agent such as tributyl phosphate. The electro-polishing may be carried out at 50 to 100‹C. using a current density between 50 and 700 amps. /sq.ft.
