[Also in Division H2] A method of controlling the winding of a plurality of juxtaposed strips of electrically conducting material to form a plurality of juxtaposed reels of the strip material comprises passing the strips through a plurality of magnetic fields before winding them on to a mandrel or the like to induce Foucault currents in the strips, which currents react with the magnetic fields to produce a deceleration of the strip, in proportion to the intensity of the current generated, thereby producing uniform tightness of binding of the reels. Metal web from a reel 1 is slit by means 2 into strips 3, 4, 5, which then form a loop 7 and pass through a magnetic deceleration device to be wound up in separate reels on a mandrel 6. The strips may be additionally tensioned by braking rolls, Fig. 4 (not shown), between the device 10 and mandrel 6. The device 10 comprises a frame 11, Fig. 3, carrying a plurality of permanent magnets or electromagnets, the poles 12 of which are arranged in two staggered rows. The gap between the poles of each permanent magnet or the energizing current of each electromagnet may be varied to modify the magnetic field. The poles of the magnets may also be moved apart to facilitate the insertion of the strips. The poles may be covered with an insulating layer to prevent sticking of strips by magnetic attraction.
