Abstract

1,147,459. Controlling vehicles. B. LOWE, and P. A. LOWE. 11 Oct., 1966 [20 Nov., 1965], No. 49396/65. Heading B7H. [Also in Division H4] In a speed-control system for road traffic, each vehicle is provided with means which in response to the reception of a specific radio signal, automatically reduces the speed of the vehicle to a predetermined maximum value by applying the brakes and simultaneously reducing the power output of the engine. A pump 1 is driven whenever the vehicle is in motion, the suction side of the pump being connected to a fluid reservoir 3 and the delivery side to a master cylinder 5 containing a free piston 6. Piston 6 is forced back by the fluid pressure until a rotary outlet valve 7 controlling return line 9 is exposed so that no further movement of the piston occurs. A governor 10 is driven with the pump 1 and controls a rocking lever 12 carrying a switch contact 13 co-operating with a contact 17 mounted on the armature 14 of a solenoid 15, the lever 12 being pivoted on the armature 14. The valve 7 is controlled by a second solenoid 20. Under normal conditions of driving the vehicle contacts 13, 17 remain open but when a predetermined radio signal is received at 22 solenoid 15 is energized causing an incremental retraction of the armature, the reception of further different signals causing corresponding retractions until the contacts 13, 17 are closed. This energizes solenoid 20 to close valve 7 so that pressure on piston 6 builds up to a maximum as determined by relief valve 23 and operates a piston 27 in a slave cylinder 26. The piston 27 is coupled to the accelerator pedal 29 and after a predetermined travel uncovers a port 30 allowing pressure fluid to be applied via pipe 31 to the braking system. The radio signals are transmitted from a plurality of stations situated at regular intervals along the road, each receiver providing a signal to operate a warning device immediately it comes within effective range of a transmitter and the driver being expected to reduce speed accordingly. When the receiver reaches the immediate vicinity of a transmitter the solenoid 15 is energized but if the driver has already responded to the warning, the contacts 13, 17 will remain open due to the lowered position of the sleeve 11. Otherwise the speed will be reduced as described until the response of the governor allows contacts 13, 17 to separate. Different signals can cause the vehicle speeds to be reduced step by step until, if desired, all traffic is stopped.
