Abstract

1386961 Automatic control of speed ASSOCIATED ENG Ltd 25 Jan 1972 [1 Feb 1971] 3640/71 Headings G3P and G3R A speed responsive system for a power unit 11 driving a shaft 12 is particularly applicable to vehicles and includes an inductive transducer 14 receiving impulses from a ferrous-toothed disc 13; a frequency-to-voltage converter 16 whose output is proportional to the frequency of the rotating disc; a comparator 21 fed from the converter 16; a differentiator 23 and reference voltage points 29, 26,; and two torque changing systems an increase system 30 and a decrease system 31 which operate a throttle actuator 32 in response to pulses from comparator 21. The reference voltage may be supplied from a potentiometer 29 or a memory circuit 26. A voltmeter 19 and a pulse counter 18 calibrated to indicate shaft speed or revolution numbers respectively or in the case of a vehicle road speed and distance respectively are included in the circuit. The memory circuit is set by closing switch 25 momentarily with the shaft running at the required speed to generate the corresponding reference voltage. The differentiator has the effect of stabilizing the system by filling in the dead band between the torque increase and decrease control modes. The control circuitry also includes feedback loops R30-D5-C10 and R31-D6-C11 from the output of the units 30, 31. The circuitry arrangements are shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 3 (not shown), illustrates the switching mechanism connecting the circuits of Fig. 1 to the power supply and controlling the modes of operation of the regulator. This mechanism is under operator control and may include drop-out contacts which respond to clutch or brake operation. Figs. 4-10 show various mechanical and hydraulic devices which respond to the output of the units 30, 31 [Figs. 4 and 5 only shown in abridgement.] These may operate the throttle directly, act as a limit device, or act to merely give a warning signal. In particular, in Fig. 4., when the system is set to Auto relay RLB operates to move valve 49 to close air bleed 50. When a torque increase voltage appears at terminal U valve 51 opens to admit manifold vacuum to chamber 48 causing bellows 45 to retact and open throttle 41. If a torque decrease voltage appears at U air is admitted via valve 53 to cause throttle to close. Fig. 5 shows an equivalent system using hydraulic circuit rather than pneumatic. In this embodiment the throttle pedal 58 is hydraulically linked to the throttle but is over-ridden by the automatic control of the fluid pressure in the system when set to Auto. The throttle opens in response to pump 59 and closes in response to relief valve 68.
