Abstract

1,147,344. Filament stretching apparatus. HEPLON Inc. 15 April, 1966, No. 16636/66. Heading B5B. Apparatus for stretching a tow of synthetic filaments such as nylon a predetermined amount comprises a series of positively driven rolls for successive passage therearound by the tow and adapted for rotation at fixed peripheral speeds which increase in the direction of travel of the tow and a series of drag rolls each of which is freely rotatable and one or more of which is provided with means for individually locking it against rotation to impart additional stretch to the tow by controlled frictional drag. The drag rolls are so positioned that the tow travels in a sinuous path in contact with the peripheral surfaces of the drag rolls before it travels over the driven rolls. The drag rolls may be disposed between a creel support and the driven rolls. The latter may all be driven by a common constant speed motor. The tow after leaving the last of the series of driven rolls over which it has travelled in a sinuous path may pass through the nip of a pair of nip rolls driven at a peripheral speed higher than that of the last of the series of driven rolls. The nip rolls may be driven by the same motor as the series of driven rolls. One axle of each of the drag rolls may be provided with a longitudinally extending peripheral groove adapted to receive the end of a bolt threadably engaged with the bearing in which the axle is rotatably mounted. When the bolt is screwed into the bearing its end enters the groove and the drag roll is thereby locked to the frame of the stretching machine. When the bolt is unscrewed sufficiently far for its end to be withdrawn from the groove in the drag roll axle the roll is no longer locked to the frame and is freely rotatable. When all the drag rolls are thus unlocked, the tow is stretched by the driven rolls only. The extent of this stretch can be increased by locking one or more of the drag rolls when filaments of higher denier are to be stretched.
