Abstract

1,146,972. Caps for containers. POROUS PLASTICS Ltd. 3 March, 1966 [4 March, 1965], No. 9320/65. Heading B8T. A removable cap for a container includes a liquid-impermeable, gas-permeable barrier layer 26 to permit passage of gases through the cap, but to retain the liquid contents of the container. The barrier layer is supported by a gas-permeable outer backing layer 25. In the form shown a screw-cap has a flat top wall 10 with an internally threaded skirt portion 11, a hole 21 being provided in the top wall. A micro-porous layer 26 deposited on a rubberlike support layer 25 is located within the cap. The layer 26 may, for example, be formed of unplasticized polyvinyl chloride, having a pore size in the range 1 to 5 microns. Alternatively a compressible material, such as plasticized polyvinyl chloride or elastomeric polyurethane, may be used. In further embodiments a larger aperture (34), Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), is provided in the top wall (10), and a rigid porous disc (37) of sintered granulated high density polyethylene is seated below the aperture to form a protective outer wall. The barrier layer (22) or (26), with or without a porous barrier support (25) is provided below the disc (37). In the embodiments of Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown) the top wall (10) entirely comprises a rigid disc (29) of, for example, sintered high density polyethylene, preferably having a pore size in the range 50 to 100 microns. The disc (29) may be joined to the skirt (11) by heat sealing, or by suitable adhesives. The barrier layer is held inside the cap as previously, with or without a support layer. In order to improve the liquid-impermeability of the barrier layer it may be treated, either before or after formation into a porous material, with a silicone. The rigid disc (37) or (29) or the barrier support (25) may be similarly treated.
