Abstract
1,146,907. Ultrasonic inspection devices. K. DEUTSCH, [trading as KARL DEUTSCH]. 8 June, 1966 [8 June, 1965], No. 25591/66. Heading H4D. In a system for indicating the quality of a weld between two workpieces the flows of ultrasonic energy through the weld zone before and after the welding operation while the workpieces are under pressure are compared. The Fig. 1 embodiment comprises piezoelectric transducers S, E, mounted in coolant passages in the electrodes El (detailed in Fig. 2, not shown) of a spot-welding machine and coupled to transmission pulse generator G and receiving amplifier V. Before the welding operation, a D.C. voltage indicative of the energy of a received pulse train is derived in unit M, stored in storage unit SP and compared with a reference voltage. Any difference between the two voltages is detected by regulator R which is operative before welding to vary the gain of amplifier V and so reduce the difference to zero, thus compensating for disturbances due e.g. to variations in acoustic coupling between the transducers S, E, and the workpieces. Control unit St then initiates and stops the flow of welding current. During cooling of the weld a second D.C. voltage indicative of the energy in a second received pulse train is derived in unit M and compared with the first (stored) D.C. voltage by means of evaluator unit A. Welding parameters may be manually or automatically controlled in accordance with the indications of unit A. Circuit details are given.
