Abstract

1,146,590. Filtration unit. UNIT SWIMMING POOLS Ltd. 26 May, 1966 [27 May, 1965], No. 22489/65. Heading B1D. A filtration unit for a swimming pool comprises a filter housing 10 on which is mounted a pump unit 12, preliminary strainer 11 protecting the pump, control valves 17, 18 and interconnecting pipework. Housing 10 may be of circular cross-section and carry a vertical plate 30, on which the other items are mounted, their weight bearing wholly on the housing 10 (Fig. 4, not shown). Housing 10 has an air bleed valve 62 and pressure gauge 61 on its removable cover (41) and a drain valve 66, and encloses two flat filter frames (52) of expanded metal supporting fabric envelopes on which diatomaceous earth is deposited at the start of filtration. Pump unit 12 comprises electric motor (25) with splash plate 36 mounted over pump (16). Initially, diatomaceous earth is placed in strainer 11 and delivered with the water through pump (16) to upper inlet (13) of housing 10, which is shielded by an internal baffle (57) (Fig. 4), filtered water leaving by lower outlet (14). Valve 18 is connected to inlet (13) and outlet (14) and delivers filtered water to the pool via valve 17. To clean the filter elements, valve 18 is adjusted to reverse the flow through the filter, valve 17 is closed and drain valve 66 of the filter housing opened to remove solids.
