Abstract
1,146,549. Film casting apparatus. EASTMAN KODAK CO. 22 July, 1966 [2 Aug., 1965], No. 33003/66. Heading B5B. In a process for casting a liquid composition into a thin sheet on coating a web or substrate the liquid composition is applied to a rotatable roll 15, from an extrusion die 10, the roll moving in the direction shown 16, and a pair of chambers, one of which 30, can form part of the extrusion die, and the other 35, can be part of a housing33, or both can be incorporated into the said housing, have openings which face the casting surface, the chambers being interconnected, and one of them 35, being connected to a vacuum source, said vacuum source serving to create a subatmospheric pressure on the side of the stream of the liquid that contacts the surface of the roll and so causing intimate contact between the liquid and the roll, thus enabling the roll speed to be increased without causing irregularities in the film produced. An adjustable baffle 47, regulates the amount of air which is drawn into the chambers, most of the air being drawn through the opening 36, of the chamber 35, to avoid vibration of the apparatus and consequent irregularities in the film. The pressure difference between the two sides of the liquid composition applied to the roll may range from 0À1 to 30À0 inches of water, the pressure on the side away from the roll surface normally being atmospheric. Thin films of polyolefins, polystyrene and polycarbonates may be produced and the invention is also applicable to the coating of a web of material which is moving past the point of application.
