Abstract

1,146,536. Hydroxyalkyl alkyl cellulose compositions; addition polymer coating compositions. DOW CHEMICAL CO. 1 Sept., 1966 [2 Sept., 1965], No. 39139/66. Headings C3F and C3P. A composition comprises a blend of two watersoluble hydroxyalkyl alkyl cellulose ethers having respective 2% water solution viscosities at 20‹ C. of at least 10,000 c.p.s. and less than 1000 c.p.s., and wherein in each ether the hydroxyalkyl moiety contains 2-4 C atoms and the alkyl 1 or 2 C atoms, the preferred relative proportions of these ethers being respectively 0À5-1À9 : 1. Hydroxypropyl methyl celluloses containing 19-24% methoxy and 4-12% hydroxypropyl are preferred. The 2% water solution viscosity of the blend is advantageously 1000-20,000 c.p.s. at 20‹ C. The composition may be used to thicken aqueous latex coating compositions. In examples a blend of hydroxypropyl methyl celluloses is used to thicken such compositions based on; (Ex. 1) an acrylic latex derived from ethyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, acrylic acid and methacrylic acid; (Ex. 2) styrene-butadiene; or (Ex. 2) polyvinyl acetate, which in each case also contain a wetting agent, ethylene and polypropylene glycols, TiO 2 , CaCO 3 , a nonylphenolethylene oxide condensate, and 1-(3-chloroallyl)-3,5,7-triaza-l-azonioadamantane chloride.
