Abstract

1276257 Polyvinyl acetate-based adhesive compositions NATIONAL STARCH & CHEMICAL CORP 11 March 1970 [26 March 1969] 11596/70 Heading C3P Adhesive compositions comprise (1) 20 to 25% by weight of polymer solids of an aqueous emulsion homo- or copolymer of vinyl acetate; (2) 0 to 32% by weight of a plasticizer and (3) 35 to 55% by weight of a non-volatile watersoluble liquid which is a substantial non-solvent for the polymer (i.e. no more than 10 parts by weight of the polymer solids can be dissolved in 100 parts by wt. of the liquid at room temperature), the percentages being based on the total of (1), (2) and (3), the composition comprising water in an amount of 0 to 25% by weight, based on the total composition. Non-volatile watersoluble liquids specified are glycerin, ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, triethylene glycol, propylene glycol, and liquid derivatives of sorbitol and mannitol. The platicizers may be chlorinated polyphenyls, organic phosphate esters, high mol. wt. polyesters, triethylene glycol esters, phthalyl substituted glycolates, phthalic acid esters, low mol. wt. polyethylene glycols and phenyl ethers of polyethylene glycol. Examples describe compositions based on poly- (vinylacetate/dibutly maleate), poly(vinyl acetate/butyl acrylate), poly(vinyl acetate/ethyl acrylate), poly(vinyl acetate/methyl methacrylate), poly(vinyl acetate/dibutyl fumarate), polyvinyl acetate, and poly(vinyl acetate/crotonic acid), and containing plasticizers and/or non- volatile water-soluble liquids selected from those specified above.
