Abstract

1,146,390. Extracting sulphur oxides from gases. UNITED STATES -OF AMERICA, DEPARTMENT OF INTERIOR. 4 Dec., 1967 [18 Jan., 1967], No. 55029/67. 'Heading C1A. SO 2 is removed from hot flue gas emanating from combustion of S-bearing fuels, e.g. coal, fuel oil, :by contacting the flue gas with an oxidation catalyst while the flue gas is at a temp. of at least the SO 2 oxidation kindling temp. of the catalyst thus producing flue gas having substantially all of the SO 2 converted to SO 3 , contacting the oxidized flue gas with a Ca 3 (PO 4 ) 2 material to produce a fertilizer material and flue gas substantially free of S oxides and separating the fertilizer material from the final flue gas. The flue gas may contain less than 0À35% dry wt of SO 2 prior to the catalytic oxidation and the phosphate bearing material may be employed as an aq. slurry during the contacting step whereby the temp. of the gas prior to passing through the contact zone would first Shave to be lowered below the B.P. of the water carrier. The material may be maintained as a shallow fluidized or fixed bed or cascading solids or any other system with low or moderate pressure. The oxidation catalyst may be V 2 O 5 with K 2 O promoter, iron oxide or Pt catalyst. The calcium phosphate material may be pure Ca 3 (PO 4 ) 2 , phosphate rock or phosphate slime. The SO 2 kindling temp. of the catalyst may be 400-500‹ C. for V 2 O 5 .
