Abstract

1439457 Particle transfer from fluidised bed EXXON RESEARCH & ENG CO 22 June 1973 [22 June 1972] 29245/72 Heading B1F Particles are transferred from a fluidised bed to an adjacent zone through a port or duct in a separating side wall, the port or duct having an entrance upwardly presented to the bed, by passing fluidising gas into the bed so as to produce a greater superficial velocity in a first region of the bed remote from the entrance than in a second region adjacent the entrance to promote an upward circulation of particles in the first region and a downward circulation of particles in the second region so that particles will enter the entrance from the second region and pass through the port or duct to the second zone. Thus particles are transferred from fluidised bed 11 through louvres 19 to fluidised bed 12 by introducing fluidising gas at a faster rate to the R.H. side of the bed 11 than the L.H. side to cause downward flow of particles in the region of louvres 19. The particles from fluidised bed 12 may similarly be returned to fluidised bed 11 through oppositely orientated louvres behind louvres 19. Thus bed 11 may be used for catalytic cracking of hydrocarbons and bed 12 used for steam stripping and regeneration of the resulting carbon coated catalyst. Or sulphur may be recovered from sulphur dioxide as disclosed in Specification 1382041, one bed being used to lay carbon down on the surface of bauxite by cracking fuel oil thereon, and the other bed being used to pass SO 2 through the resulting bauxite to reduce the SO 2 . Or the apparatus shown may be used for the process disclosed in Specifications 1183937 and 1336563 in which sulphur-containing hydrocarbons are combusted partially or fully in a fluidised bed of calcium and/or magnesium oxide where sulphur is fixed as solid sulphur compounds on the particles, and the particles are passed to a regeneration fluidised bed.
