Abstract

1,146,215. Copolymers. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 3 May, 1967 [3 May, 1966], No. 20619/67. Heading C3P. [Also in Divisions B2 and G2] 'Copolymers of (a) 70-90% by weight of an unsaturated ester of a monocarboxylic acid wherein the alcohol component contains no more than four carbon atoms, (b) 7-20% by weight of an aliphatic polyfunctional compound containing at least two sites of carbon to carbon unsaturation, at least one of which is an allyl or vinyl group, or glycidyl acrylate, glycidyl methacrylate, methacrylate esters wherein the alcohol portion of the ester has a free hydroxy group, or fumaric acid, and (c) 3-30% by weight of itaconic acid, fumaric acid, acrylic acid or methacrylic acid, with the proviso that when (b) is fumaric acid (c) is itaconic acid, percentages of the constituents of the copolymer being based on the total weight of (a), (b) and (c). In the examples the following monomers are copolymerized in the presence of sodium lauryl sulphate in water, and ammonium persulphate; (a) methyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate, vinyl acetate; (b) diallyl malonate, allyl methacrylate, diallyl oxalate, diallyl succinate, allyl acrylate, diallyl sebacate, fumaric acid, glycidyl acrylate, diallyl itaconate, diallyl fumarate, divinyl sulphone, divinyl sulphite, triallyl amine, 1,1,1-trimethylol propane trimethacrylate, 1,4- divinyloxy butane, vinyl methacrylate, tris(1- aziridine (phosphine oxide, 1,1,3,3-tetraallyl oxypropane, 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate, 2-hydroxy propyl methacrylate and (c) itaconic acid, maleic acid and fumaric acid.
