Abstract

1,146,136. Making Nb-U alloys. UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION. Dec.14, 1967 [Feb.24, 1966], No.56970/67. Heading C7D. In a method of producing a niobium-uranium alloy by vacuum sintering a mixture of niobium oxide, uranium oxide and carbon, a predetermined total void volume and void size is obtained in the alloy by employing a mixture containing a greater than or lower than stoichiometric carbon to oxygen ratio. Specifically referred to is the production of Nb-20%U using a number of carbon: oxygen ratios to obtain a range of porosities. Porosity is also affected by (a) carbon particle size - fewer voids result from the use of finer graphite particle; and (b) nature of the crucible used for sintering - Nb and Ta crucibles produce denser alloys than crucibles made from ZrO 2 , Y 2 O 3 , TaC or graphite.
