Abstract
1,145,555. Rollers. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 7 July, 1967 [5 Aug., 1966], No. 35219/66. Heading F2U. A processing roller comprises a metal core 1 fast with a surrounding skeleton or cage-like structure 2, 3 embedded in an embracing moulded layer of an organopolysiloxane elastomer providing the working surface of the roller which may be concentric or eccentric with respect to the core axis. As shown, the cage-like structure comprises discs 2 welded, brazed or adhered at spaced intervals to the core 1 and having axially extending bars 3 secured, as by welding &c., at spaced circumferential intervals around the discs 2, the assembly being of solid form, or alternatively may be hollow, e.g. tubular, providing passageways for the circulation of steam or water for heating or cooling the roll. The method of manufacture comprises locating the core and cage unit 1-3 inside a cylindrical casting shell (7), Fig. 3 (not shown), and introducing by means of a vacuum pump (not shown), connected to an outlet pipe (18), a viscous organopolysiloxane gum composition (22) which is siphoned from a reservoir (23) into the shell where it is allowed to cure as an elastomer and adhere to the cage &c. After removal from the casting shell, the roller surface may be machined or abraded and may be sprayed with a dilute solution of the gum composition to effect a very smooth surface. The organopolysiloxane elastomer has a Young's Modulus in the range 250 to 1000 lb./sq. inch.
