A ceramic material suitable for use in a voltage variable capacitor or piezoelectric element consists of a lead zirconate-titanate stannate composition lying within the area ABCD of the triaxial diagram shown in Fig. 1d, and containing an additive ingredient having an ionic radius matching that of lead, tin, titanium, zirconium or oxygen and a valence state higher than said element by less than three units, the ingredient replacing a quantity -of the element having an equal number of valence units. For material within area ABCFE of the diagram the additive must include at least one element selected from bismuth, chromium, tungsten, iron, uranium, antimony, strontium, calcium, barium and magnesium, and the total additive concentration must lie in the range 0-1 to 20 atom per cent, and between 0-1 and 5 atom per cent if one of the additives is Bi, Cr, W, Fe, U or Sb. The material preferably includes a further additive from niobium, tantalum, lanthanum and the trivalent rare earth elements and these may be used as alternatives to the above listed additives in compositions lying within area DEF of the diagram. The oxygen content of the composition may be partially substituted by fluorine. A number of preferred compositions are listed in Table A in the Specification. Devices may be made by applying contacts to opposed faces of discs of the material. The electrical properties of the materials and the internal changes of crystal structure around the Curie temperature which give rise to them are discussed in the Specification.
