Abstract

1,145,252. Welding by fusion. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 17 June, 1966 [17 June, 1965], No. 25759/65. Heading B3R. In an arc welding torch for making internal annular welds, in which the electrode 1 is mounted near one end of a tubular holder 2 through which current and shielding gas are passed to the electrode 1, the electrode is retained in a transverse bore 4 near the closed end of the tubular holder 2 by a spring-loaded rod 3a extending axially through the holder 2. The holder 2 is of copper and is provided with a ceramic sheath 5 having an aperture through which the electrode 1 projects, and the shielding gas exits. Part of the shielding gas passes through holes 20 in the holder 2 and along passages 21 between the holder 2 and the sheath 5 to act as a cooling agent. The holder 2 is carried by an insulating block 6 rotatable in bearings 9 by a worm and worm-wheel 7. An extension 11 of the holder 2 has a conical end in sliding contact with a stationary carbon body 12 to which the current is connected. Gas is fed from an inlet 14 through the body 12 to the extension 11.
