Abstract

1,145,200. Microporous polyurethane laminates. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. 22 June, 1967 [22 June, 1966], No. 28878/67. Heading B5N. [Also in Divisions B2 and C3] Laminates may be produced by bonding a microporous polyurethane sheet material to various porous substrates such as leather and fabrics. The microporous polyurethane sheet material is produced by first forming a solution comprising (a) 90 to 70 parts by weight based on the dry substance of one or more polyurethane ureas which are free from NCO groups, suitably contained in a polar, water-soluble solvent and (b) 10 to 30 parts by weight of one or more high M.W. substantially linear cationic polyurethanes free from NCO groups and which contain 8 to 35% by weight of urethane groups and, if desired, also urea groups, and 0À5 to 2À0% by weight of quaternary ammonium nitrogen atoms, the cationic polyurethane being present in the form of an aqueous dispersion or colloidal solution which has a concentration such that the quantity of water introduced by it into the mixture so formed is less than 7% by weight added to (c) 200 to 2000 parts by weight of a water-soluble, polar solvent for (a) having a b.p. above 100‹ C., the viscosity of which solution is 1 to 30 minutes when measured in a Ford viscosimeter with 6 mm. outflow nozzle at 20‹ C., (d) coating the solution on to a non- porous substrate and allowing it to gel in moist air, dipping the whole into water to extract the solvent, drying and stripping the foil from the substrate. In an Example (la) a microporous polyurethane foil prepared by the above process was glued on to a piece of perforated leather and also on to a velveteen fabric using a mixture of polyurethane and polyisocyanate in ethyl acetate as adhesive. The top surface of the foil was dressed with several applications of a pigmented aqueous dispersion of a cationic polyurethane and was dried and pressed between each application. A product similar to leather in appearance and feel was obtained. The microporous layers may also be applied to wood, paper, cardboard, woven and non-woven textiles, metal and brickwork.
