Abstract

A vapour permeable non-porous glossy sheet material comprises a fibrous substrate having a microporous synthetic polymeric coating and, adhering to this coating, a vapour-permeable non-porous coating of a synthetic polymeric material 0.1 to 1.3 mil thick, the material having a vapour permeability of at least 600 for a 1 mil film, and being free of light-scattering gas/polymer interfaces and pores visible with a 300x power microscope. Examples of materials for the coating include polyurethanes, e.g. polyesterurethanes, polyetherurethanes and those prepared from diamines and bishaloformates, a copolymer of methyl methacrylate with butadiene and partially iminated methacrylic acid, or a multiple coating having two coatings of an acrylic latex followed by a thin coating of cellulose acetate butyrate. The coating is preferably applied by dip coating, but may also be applied by spraying, roller coating or doctor blade coating. The coating suitably contains pigments. The initial microporous coating may be applied as a coating of a dispersion of the polymer in a mixture of a solvent and non-solvent for the polymer, and subsequently leaching out the solvent. The final coated fabric may be embossed, and if desired a further coating, e.g. of a polyetherurethane may be applied.
