In a dermatome having a reciprocable cutting blade 4 and a pivotal gauge bar 6 parallel to it for determining the cutting depth, the position of the gauge bar is adjusted by an adjusting screw 9 threaded into a cross member 20, which is fixed relative to the blade, and loosely engaging a recess 21 in the gauge bar, the gauge bar being urged by springs 19 towards the adjustment screw, and an indicator 22 and scale 25 being associated with the gauge bar for indicating the cutting depth. The indicator 22 is pivotal on a pin 23 fixed on a side member (13, Figs. 1 and 2) of the cutting head and, at its end remote from the scale 25, has a slot 24 engaged by a pin 26 extending from the gauge bar. When the gauge bar is pivotted about its axis 11 so that its gauge edge (7, Fig. 3) is displaced to adjust the cutting depth, the pin 26 is displaced a corresponding amount and pivots the indicator 22 proportionally. The blade is supported so that its edge abuts a forwardly directed sharp edge (5, Fig. 3) on a member 2, which is supported by the side members (13, 14, Figs. 1 and 2) and which in use is slid over the skin. Shoes (27, Fig. 1), which contact the skin on each side of the device, are adjustable by a knob (33) to vary the width of the cut. The blade 114, Fig. 7, may be supported by a holder 105, which is pivotal about an axis 111 and which has a removable cover 116, the forward end of which clamps the blade on the holder and provides a stationary guiding ramp for skin severed by the blade. The blade is held on the holder by engagement between co-operating pins 112 and slots 113. The blade holder is laterally reciprocated by rotation of an eccentric roll 103 which is driven by a shaft 102 and engages a fork (104, Fig. 6) fixed to the holder.
