Abstract

1,144,791. Stranding cables. SUMITOMO ELECTRIC INDUSTRIES Ltd. 11 Feb., 1966 [17 Feb., 1965 ; 14 Dec., 1965], No. 6081/66. Heading H1A. Apparatus for the reversed-lay stranding of insulated wires for communications cables comprises supply bobbins (not shown), a guiding face plate 3 for aligning the wires, an accumulator 1, rotating in a fixed sense at a constant speed n, an oscillating roller 2 having two groups of rollers, one group movable relative to the other to vary the draw-off speed and give twists to the wires which reverse in direction of lay for every length I accumulated in accumulator 1, and a constant speed take up device (not shown). Several accumulators (1, Fig. 5, not shown) may be installed in series to decrease the lay length. A plurality of stranding units may be run in parallel, and the resultant strands passed to a further series unit, for assembling into a cable (Fig. 6, not shown). Constant pay-off speed is maintained by an inverse oscillating roller (111, Fig. 7, not shown) similar to oscillating roller 2, but inserted before the accumulator (114) and synchronized in opposition to the first oscillating roller. Adhesive, from a coating head (117, Fig. 7, not shown) protects those portions of the strand where the lay is reversed. A buffer (Fig. 10, not shown) comprising rollers (135) on fixed axes and a spring-controlled, vertically movable roller (136), is inserted between the inverse roller (111) and assembling dies (112) to compensate time differences between reversals of the oscillating and inverse rollers.
