Abstract
1,144,564. Boots &c. CLARKS Ltd. 7 June, 1966 [10 March, 1965], No. 10259/65. Heading A3B. In a method of making a shoe the upper 1 is cut with straight back-seam edges 6, 7 which are closed by the use of adhesive or by sewing and then rounded or bulged to fit the heel. The corresponding edges 8, 9 of the two parts 10, 11 of a heel stiffener and the edges of the lining are also cut straight. A toe puff 12 and a lining 13 are placed on the cut upper which is then folded to a near closed position in which the topline 21 is given any required treatment e.g. skiving, channelling and folding. The upper assembly is then located on a jigging frame by means of pins engaging in holes or slits 20 and the back seam of the upper closed by sewing or cementing. A suitable cement is one based on a two part polyurethane and tri-isocyanate mix which may be set by heating by high frequency means when under pressure. After closing the back seam of the upper the stiffener parts 10, 11 are joined by bonding and any decorative stitching required is applied. The final operation is shaping the straight back by treating the shoe with steam and moulding in one or two stages. The method of making shoes according to the invention results in a saving of leather (Fig. 5) the amount lying between a straight line 30 and a curved line 29 being saved. The leather of the upper may be stretched (Fig. 5) to obtain an additional saving of leather.
