Abstract

A system for checking the vertical alignment of two places comprises a hollow cylinder 4 having cross hairs 7, the cylinder being suspended on a filament 2 by a stirrup 5 in which a mirror 10, inclined at 45 degrees to the longitudinal axis 9 of the cylinder, is supported and a device 3 for damping unwanted movements of the cylinder and the filament. The damping device consists of an annular body 11 having at least one fin 12 and is secured to a rod 6 connecting the filament to the stirrup. The body 11 is partially immersed in liquid 16 contained in an annular receptacle 14 which is mounted on adjustable legs 15. When used to check the alignment between an upper place A and a lower place B, the filament is attached to the place A and screws 8 are adjusted to bring the central mark of the cross hairs 7 on to the axis 9. A horizontally directed telescope is then used to view the place B through the transparent cross hairs by reflection from the mirror 10. In modifications, an image of the intersecting cross hairs denoting the position of the place A is projected on to the plane containing the place B and a camera may be used to measure the misalignment photographically.
