Abstract

1,144,412. Silicon carbide coatings DOW CORNING CORP. 21 Sept., 1967 [2 Dec., 1966], No. 43047/67. Heading B2K. An object is coated with silicon carbide by heating the object to at least 1150‹C., and then quenching the object in a liquid bath consisting essentially of one or more of the silanes of the formula:- wherein each R is a chlorine or hydrogen atom or a methyl, ethyl or propyl radical, and R<SP>1</SP> is a methyl, ethyl or propyl radical. The heating and quenching steps may be repeated to achieve a desired coating thickess. Examplified substrates are graphite, molybdenum, tantalum, niobium, a steel-ball stud and a turbine blade of Inconel (Registered Trade Mark) metal. Suitable silanes are dimethyl dichlorosilane, methyl trichlorosilane, ethylmonochlorosilane, propyl trichlorosilane and trimethyl monochlorosilane.
