Type-wheel machines; power assisted input arrangements; rotary character selection.-A selective printer for writing upon drawings comprises a base support 11, Fig. 2, rested on the drawing and supporting a motor 18 and bearing pedestals 14, which receive input and output shafts 21, 17 connected to one another by a clutch and brake 19, the shaft 17 supporting a hollow cylindrical carriage 16 on which is mounted a type wheel 12, rocked for impression of the selected character into contact with the drawing, whereupon the carriage is advanced in letter-spacing direction. Depression of a type key 15 (Fig. 9) energizes clutch 19 which rotates shaft 17 until a contact on selector disc 22 makes a subsidiary circuit to energize solenoid 55 which disengages the clutch 19 and applies its associated brake whereupon the type wheel with its selected character is rocked downwardly by an electromagnet 20 whose armature 23, Fig. 4A, rocks a bail 36 in a clockwise direction to rock a lug 28 depending from the carriage 16 and effect impression of the type wheel 12. The electromagnet is energized by the discharge of a capacitor 57 through the electromagnet coil. Alignment for impression.-Carriage 16 is provided with a depending lug 42 (Fig. 5A) to which is articulated a spring biased slide 40 having an upstanding triangular lug 40a which following rocking of the type wheel engages a complementary recess provided on the rear radial face of the type wheel. Letter-spacing arrangements.-On depression of a space bar (not shown) a rockable housing 45, Fig. 6B, which is mounted in pins 60 and has a fixed pawl 47 and a slidable pawl 50, is rocked to disengage a tooth 27 of an escapement rack on carriage 16 from the pawl 47 whereby a spring 53, Fig. 2, which prevails over pawl spring 52, draws the carriage 16 to the right and there tensions spring 52 and moves pawl 50 to the opposite side of the slot 46. The housing 45 is then rocked back so that pawl 47 engages the next tooth 27 and spring 52 retracts the slidable pawl 50 to its original position.
