Abstract

In a web printing method a plurality of streams of ink are directed on to the surface of a roller rotating in contact with the web and at least one of the streams is moved axially of the roller during the printing. Preferably a plurality of streams of different colours are used and at least one is maintained stationary with respect to the roller. In preferred embodiments the stream or streams of ink is/are moved axially of the roller during printing either in a predetermined and repetitive fashion or in an entirely arbitrary manner, the web is pre-coated or preprinted with a colour or pattern, the roller is of rubber or metal surface. Tanks of ink fitted with tubes and valve regulated outlets are placed above the roller. The ink controls fitted to the tanks may be so arranged and the tanks so staggered that the tanks are movable axially of the roller.
