Abstract

1,143,505. Azole compounds. CIBA Ltd. 30 Sept., 1966 [30 Nov., 1965], No. 43872/66. Heading C2C. [Also in Divisions A5, C3, C5 and D1] The invention comprises azole compounds of the formula in which Ar represents the monovalent residue of a pyrine; B represents a benzene residue which is condensed with the azole ring and may contain non-chromophoric substituents and X 1 represents -O- or -NQ- where Q stands for hydrogen; methyl ethyl; #- hydroxyethyl; #,y-dihydroxy propyl or #- cyanoethyl. Of particular interest are those compounds of formula in which X 2 is -O- and -NH- and R x is hydrogen or halogen, or an alkyl, alkoxy, carboxyl, carboxylic acid ester, amide (substituted or unsubstituted) or nitrile group; or an alkyl group which is substituted by one or more carboxyl, carboxylic acid ester, carboxylic acid amide or nitrile, hydroxy, alkoxy or amino groups; a phenyl, alkyl phenyl or aralkyl group; an amino group which may be substituted; a sulphonic acid group, a sulphonic acid alkyl or aryl ester group, a sulphonamide group, a sulphinic acid alkyl or aryl ester group, an alkyl sulphone group, an alkenyl sulphone or an aryl sulphone group; m is 1-4; and in which two vicinal residues R x together with the benzene nucleus to which they are attached may form a tetrahydronaphthalene ring. The compounds of the first formula given above may be formed by reacting a carboxyl compound of the formula ArCOZ, in which Z is hydroxyl or halogen and Ar is as defined above with an amino benzene of formula to give a compound of formula which is then heated to a temperature in the range 150-350‹ C. to form the desired compound. Alternatively compounds of the second formula given above are produced by reacting a carboxylic acid chloride of formula with an aminobenzene of formula to give an acyl compound of formula which is heated to form the required compound. Examples are given of the preparation of compounds in which X 1 in the 1st formula above is -O- or -NH- and the benzene nucleus B is unsubstituted or is substituted by one or two methyl groups, a tertiary-butyl, an α,α-dimethyl benzyl, or a tetramethylene group.
