Abstract

1,143,473. Mixing apparatus. INDUSTRIAL FILTER & PUMP MFG. CO. 12 July, 1966. No. 31322/66. Heading B1C. Apparatus for chemically treating a liquid comprises an elongated mixing chamber or conduit 32 with inlet and outlet 35, 36; a rotatable axial shaft 40 carrying impellers 41, 42; and inlets 43, 44 delivering treating chemicals to vortices created by the respective impellers. The mixing chamber may have a neoprene lining, and an automatic valve 27 may allow passage of treating chemical only when the pump for the treated liquid is operating. There may be two such mixers in series. In one example, waste cyanide solution is pumped to inlet 35, and alkaline solution and gaseous chlorine supplied to inlets 43, 44 respectively. In another example, the treated liquid is a chromium effluent which is converted from the toxic hexavalent to the trivalent state by treatment with sulphuric acid and sulphur dioxide.
