Abstract

1,143,109. Cellular coatings, L. FELT. 20 July, 1966 [27 Jan., 1966], No. 32660/66. Heading B2E. A floor- or wall-covering material comprises a cellular layer of polyvinyl chloride, or of vinyl chloride co-polymerized with a minor amount of vinyl acetate of vinylidene chloride, or a mixture of vinyl chloride homopolymer with vinyl chloride copolymerized with a vinyl amount of vinyl acetate of vinylidene chloride or both, an intermediate layer of woven openmesh fabric, and a non-cellular of vinyl composition layer composed of resin comprising the same or another resin from those specified above, integrated through penetration of resin composition via the openings in the fabric from vinyl layer to vinyl layer. The sheet material may be produced by certain methods of spreading or calendering well known to the art. In the example a spreadable layer of composition based on polyvinyl chloride which is plasticised and can contain fillers, heat stabilizers or colouring matter and containing a blowing agent, is spread by a coating knife supported by a rubber-covered roll on a continuous band of aluminium foil; the continuous web of open weave or open mesh fabric, for instance net, is laid into the spread composition; the compined sheet is heated to temperature which will gell the layer and initiate its expansion; the composite layer is smooth on a smoothing calender, the layer cooled and a layer of composition having the same vinyl basis than the first layer but without the blowing agent is then spread on the fabric. The foil is heated until gelation of the second layer takes place and expansion of the first layer is substantially completed. The assembly is cooled and the sheet material removed from the aluminium foil. The resulting sheeting may be embossed before coating or decorated in any desirable manner during or after manufacture. Polymers exemplified from the two layers are polyvinyl chloride, vinyl chloride copolymerized with a minor amount of vinylidene chloride a mixture of vinyl chloride homopolymers with vinyl chloride copolymerized with a minor amount of vinyl acetate, a mixture of vinyl chloride homopolymers with vinylchloride copolymerized with a minor amount of vinylidene chloride and a mixture of vinyl chloride homopolymer with vinyl chloride propolymerized with a minor amount of vinyl acetate and minor amount of vinylidene chloride. The reinforcing intermediate fabric can consist of fabric made from natural or man-made fibres of mixtures thereof including fabric made from animal hair and jute.
