Abstract

1,143,043. Expansion joints for concrete. W. R. GRACE & CO. 25 April, 1967 [25 April, 1966], No. 19053/67. Heading E1G. A clean-walled groove for an expansion joint is formed by inserting into the wet concrete a removable rigid strip 11 of wood, steel or plastics having a protruding layer 12 of compressible sponge rubber or sponge plastics. The concrete is then floated by hand or machine. The float compresses the layer 12 as it passes and the subsequent expansion of the sponge pushes away the wet concrete to establish straight clean edges to the groove. When the concrete has set the compound strip 11-12 is removed and the groove filled with asphalt &c. The rigid strip 11 may then be re-used with a fresh sponge layer. The side walls of the sponge strip may be parallel (as shown) or convergent.
