Abstract

1,142,939. Grinding. CHURCHILL MACHINE TOOL CO. Ltd. 28 June, 1967 [28 April, 1966], No. 18587/66. Heading B3D. A steady for a machine for grinding crank-pins of crank-shafts for internal combustion engines comprises a plurality of bearing pads 3, 3a, 3b to support the workpiece through the intermediary of a pressure acting between each pad and the workpiece, at least one of the pads acting as a control pad, means enabling each pad to be moved radially towards or away from the workpiece whilst maintaining the pad surfaces substantially equidistant from a predetermined axis of rotation of the workpiece, and means associated with the control pad actuable in response to variation in the pressure between the pad and workpiece to effect simultaneous radial movement of each pad to compensate for the pressure variation so that the pressure associated with the control pad is maintained substantially constant. As described the workpiece 1 is supported between three pads 3, 3a, 3b, pads 3 and 3a being mounted in the frame 5 of the steady, and pad 3b being mounted in'an arm 17 which can be moved about a pivot 18 upon removal of a pin 19 to permit loading and unloading of the workpiece. Each pad is carried by a non-rotatable screw 4, 4a, 4b engaging a nut formed as a wheel 9 meshing with a worm 7. The worms 7, 7a, 7b are interconnected by chains and driven from an hydraulic or electric motor 16 so that the pads are moved simultaneously radially of the workpiece. The operative surface of each pad is formed with a pocket 21 to which fluid, such as coolant, is fed, the pressure of the fluid supporting the workpiece. One of the pads has a connection 26 to a pressure responsive switch controlling a pair of solenoid operated switches. If the pressure at the pad rises, one of the switches is actuated so that motor 16 causes the pads to move radially outwards, and if the pressure falls, the other switch actuates the motor so that the pads move radially inwards.
