Abstract
1,142,285. Purified magnesium hydroxide. MERCK & CO. Inc. 8 March, 1967 [15 March, 1966], No. 10984/67. Heading C1A. Mg(OH) 2 containing not more than 0À25 wt. per cent of sulphate is obtained by treating an Mg(OH) 2 slurry containing more than 0À25 up to 1 wt. per cent of sulphate, based on the Mg(OH) 2 , with from 0À005 to 0À2 part by weight of an alkali metal hydride or hydroxide, per part by weight of Mg(OH) 2 , preferably at 100-200‹ F., and filtering the Mg(OH) 2 from the mixture. Preferred reagents are sodium hydroxide, sodium hydride, potassium hydride and potassium hydroxide. The slurry is typically aqueous and usually contains 2-10 wt. per cent Mg(OH) 2 .
