Abstract

1,142,178. Polymerization catalyst for dienes. GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO. 23 Jan., 1968 [23 Feb., 1967], No. 3410/68. Heading C3P. A polymerization catalyst composition for butadiene comprises (1) at least one organometallic compound in which the metal is selected from Groups I, II, and III, of the Periodic System, (2) at least one nickel salt of a carboxylic acid or organic complex of nickel compound and (3) HF. The catalyst is used to polymerize butadiene alone, or in admixture with other diolefins, e.g. isoprene. Component (1) is preferably selected from organoaluminium, organomagnesium, organozinc, and organolithium compounds. Specified nickel compounds are nickel benzoate, acetate, naphthenate, octanoate, palmitate, stearate, acetylacetonate and salicaldehyde, bis-(alpha-furyl dioxime) nickel, bis-(salicylaldehyde) ethylene diimine nickel, and nickel tetracarbonyl. The polymerization may be effected in bulk, but is preferably carried out in a liquid hydrocarbon which has been saturated with H.F. The exemplified catalyst is triethyl aluminium and nickel octanoate. In the examples the reaction is terminated by addition of 2,4-di-t-butyl-paracresol mixed with crude abietic acid or 1,1<SP>1</SP>,1<SP>11</SP>- nitrilotri-2-propanol.
