Abstract

1416691 Polymerization catalysts for butadiene GOODYEAR TIRE & RUBBER CO 24 Oct 1972 [24 Nov 1971] 48953/72 Heading C3P A catalyst composition for the solution polymerization of butadiene or a mixture of butadiene and at least one other diolefin to form polymers having a high proportion of the butadiene units in the cis-1,4-configuration comprises (1) at least one organo aluminium compound AlR 3 , where R is alkyl, aryl, alkaryl or arylalkyl and one R may also be alkoxy, hydrogen or fluorine or R<SP>1</SP> 4 LiAl where R<SP>1</SP> is alkyl, alkaryl or arylalkyl, (2) at least one nickel compound selected from nickel salts of carboxylic acid, organic complex compounds of nickel or nickel tetracarbonyl and (3) anhydrous hydrogen fluoride, said catalyst composition having been formed by mixing (1) to (3) in an inert medium in the presence of a conjugated diolefin wherein the mole ratio of (1) to (2) is 0À3 : 1 to 300 : 1, the mole ratio of (3) to (2) is 0À5 : 1 to 200 : 1, the mole ratio of (3) to (1) is 0À2 : 1 to 10 : 1 and in the preforming step the mole ratio of the conjugated diene to the nickel compound is 1 : 1 to 3000 : 1. The preformed catalyst may be aged before being used in the polymerization. In the examples triethyl aluminium or triisobutyl aluminium, nickel octanoate and HF are mixed in the presence of butadiene or isoprene and are used to polymerize butadiene in benzene and the polymerization stopped by the addition of triisopropanol amine and dibutylparacresol. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,142,178.
