Abstract

1,142,092. Plate-type heat exchangers; refrigerating. APPARATEBAU MYLAU VEB. 25 Feb., 1966, No. 8331/66. Headings F4H and F4S. [Also in Division B3] A heat exchanger, mainly for use in transferring heat from liquid refrigerant to refrigerant vapour in a refrigeration cycle, comprises plates defining channels for the passage of heatexchange fluids, which plates are separated by thin corrugated members which also act as additional heat exchange surfaces and cause turbulence. As shown, the channels 3, 6 are arranged one inside the other, the inner channel 3 being defined by a box formed of dish-like plate elements 1, 2 having flanges 1e, 2e and being divided by a parting plate 7 in which there is an aperture 7a at the bend of the U of the channel, and which lies between the flanges 1e, 2e of the plates 1, 2. The outer channel 6 is defined by the space between the outer surface of the inner box 1, 2 and a similar outer box formed of plate elements 4, 5 having flanges 4e, 5e, which flanges abut on to the flanges 1e, 2e of the inner box. Apertures 1g, 2g, 7b are formed in the flanges 1e, 2e and the parting plate 7 at the bend of the U, the portion 2f of flange 2e which is cut out being bent over the flange 1e and plate 7 to seal the joint in the inner box. The unit is sealed and held together by bending over the extended lower outer flange 5f in similar manner. Pipes for admission and discharge of the fluids are provided at the ends of the channels, two pipes 14, 15 communicating with the inner channel passing through holes in the plate elements 4, 1 and 5, 2 respectively, the holes being surrounded by flanges 12, 10, 13, 11 respectively, of which the flanges 10, 11 of the holes in the inner plate elements 1, 2 project into the outer holes, and two pipes 18, 19 projecting through further holes in the outer plate elements 4, 5, which holes are also provided with flanges 16, 17 respectively. The pipes are chamfered at the ends in the inlet and outlet chambers 3a, 6a of the channels 3, 6. All joints are sealed by automatic soldering, using plated solder (21, Fig. 4), wire solder (20, Fig. 3) or foil solder (22, Fig. 5). The medium nearer to room temperature is passed through the outer channel 6. Several units may be assembled together (Figs. 7-10), both ends of the connecting pipes being chamfered for this purpose.
