Abstract

1,141,957. Rolling cylindrical articles; forging. ROTARY PROFILES (JERSEY) Ltd. 25 April, 1967 [5 May, 1966], No. 19016/67. Headings B3H and B3M. A process for manufacturing a cylindrical article includes the steps of positioning a blank 16 within a cavity defined by three outer rolls 10, 14 and by a pair of opposed profiling cheeks 42 and 44, urging the cheeks inwardly to decrease the width of the cavity and to impose their profiles on the ends of the blank, simultaneously moving the rolls 10, 12 outwardly to accommodate the increasing diameter of the blank, and finally moving the rolls inwardly to impose their profile on the blank circumference (Fig. 4). During the profiling, spikes 46 may be hydraulically urged towards one another to indent the ends of the blank, and one of the spikes may then be passed through the blank to pierce a hole. The cheeks 42 and 44 are carried on arms 32 which are pivoted by hydraulic cylinders 34 about a hinge 30. Hydraulic motors 52 rotate the cheeks by means of splined spigots 36, the cheeks thereby rotating the blank and hence the rolls 10, 14. The spikes 46 are movable axially by hydraulic cylinders 54. The cheeks 42, 44 may be provided with projections or indentations such as gear teeth, and one cheek is formed with recesses 58, 60 to accommodate excess material during rolling.
