A panel of substantially rectangular plan comprises a core 1 of foamed plastics material sandwiched between and bonded on one side to a first facing sheet 2 which is "corrugated" and on the other side to a second facing sheet 6 which is "corrugated" in a direction at right angles to the corrugation of the sheet 2, the sheet 2 protruding at 3 beyond the core along one edge of the panel and the sheet 6 protruding at 5 beyond the core along a second edge of the panel. The protrusion of sheets 2 and 6 may take place along opposite edges of the panel, as shown, or along adjacent edges. It is stated that the term "corrugated sheet" includes sheet material having parallel ridges, ribs, wrinkles, furrows, or pleats. The plastics core may be of foamed polyvinyl chloride or foamed phenolformaldehyde resin, but is preferably polyurethane foam prepared, e.g. from a polyisocyanate and a hydroxyl compound preferably of the polyester or polyether type. Examples of particular isocyanates, polyesters, and polyethers are given. When the panel is intended for use as a packing material the facing sheets 2, 6 are of paper. When the panel is intended for use in building, e.g. as part of a roof, the facing sheets are both of strong material, e.g. metal, such as steel or aluminium, which may be protected by being vitreous enamelled, plastics coated, galvanized, painted, or anodized; resin bonded fibreglass; asbestos cement; or plastics such as polyvinyl chloride, polyisobutylene or acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene co-polymer. In an alternative embodiment an edging strip or strips is or are bonded to the core preferably along the edges where the facing sheets protrude. In a method of making this embodiment the upper and lower facing sheets are moved through a conveyer system in substantially parallel but offset relationship and foamforming ingredients are dispersed on the lower facing sheet. The edging strips are fed through the conveyer system to prevent spreading of the foam across the facing sheets, and if desired heat is applied to promote foaming and gelling. Preferably the first facing sheet is a corrugated sheet having its corrugations transverse to its direction of movement so that it may be fed from a roll. The foam-forming ingredients may be applied to the sheet while it passes over an outwardly bowed platform. When the sheet is of metal the corrugations may be formed in an originally planar sheet by mechanical means. The second facing sheet is supplied in lengths or from a roll. The edging strips used are e.g. of paper, plastics, e.g. foamed polyurethane or polystyrene, rubber, or cork, and may be bonded to the core or detachable. The lower facing sheet is preferably carried through the conveyer system on a paper support folded at one or both edges and supported by side rails. Using suitably contoured edging strips or side rails panels with tongued or grooved edgings may be produced.
