Abstract

1,141,620. Moulding pneumatic tyres. DUNLOP CO. Ltd. 18 May, 1966 [5 June, 1965], No. 21988/66. Heading B5A. A method of manufacturing a pneumatic tyre comprises injecting tread material into an annular mould cavity having a maximum diameter equal to the final external diameter of the tyre to form a tread portion 7, and shaping a carcass (not shown) into toroidal form and into contact with the inner surface of the tread portion. At least one reinforcement layer 6 of circumferentially inextensible material is located within the mould cavity before injecting through a passageway 3. The mould portions 1, 2 comprise a plurality of hinged segments. The tread portion 7 may be removed from the outer mould portion 1 before or after being brought into contact with a carcass on a radially expansible tyre building drum (not shown). The side portions 8 of the tread portion 7 are then rolled down into adhering contact with the carcass.
