Abstract

1,141,609. Hoist pulley arrangements. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 29 July, 1966 [30 July, 1965], No. 32694/65. Heading B8B. [Also in Divisions F2 and G6] A hoist mechanism for a neutron flux detector 13 is mounted in a shield plug 10 of a nuclear reactor and comprises a pair of parallel chains 14 supporting the detector 13 and adapted to carry electrical cables 45 extending between the detector 13 and a stationary point on the mechanism casing, to which the remote ends of the chains 14 are secured. The chains 14 pass around a double sprocket 15 mounted in a stirrup 30 which is raised and lowered by a chain 33. The latter passes over the sprocket of a winding mechanism (not shown) in the plug 10, and extends downwardly into a channel 38 in the mechanism casing where its end is attached to a balance weight. Overwind spring assemblies 60, 61 are provided to be engaged by conical heads adjacent both ends of the chain 33. A shock absorber is provided at the bottom of the stirrup travel path. The two chains 14 are linked together at intervals by spacer frames providing a channel for each of the cables 45, which extend through a passage 46 in the plug 10 from the said stationary point to a connector at the top of the plug. The detector 13 is provided with a recess 13A to receive a locking cam, in the upper position of the detector. The mechanism may be applied in mine winding gear, marine cable work or well drilling operations.
