Abstract

1,141,506. Magnetic recording and playback. INTERNATIONAL COMPUTERS Ltd. 5 July, 1966 [11 Aug., 1965], No. 34283/65. Heading G5R. An information storage disc 1, comprises a flexible information storage member 4 mounted on a rotatable support disc 2, displacement of the member 4 into contact with one or more transducer heads 31 being caused by the passage of a compressible fluid into a cavity 3 between member 4 and disc 2. In operation, disc 1 is put in position on a boss 10 of a shaft 11 and a shaft 19 carrying a guide member 14 is moved towards the disc until bearing 15 of guide member 14 slidably engages a spigot on boss 10. Guide member 14 contains a thrust member 13 which has an annular recess 28 connecting holes 5, 6 formed in disc 1. Air or other compressible fluid is passed at low pressure through a duct 27, hole 26, recess 25, holes 6, recess 28 and holes 5 into cavity 3 to press a coating of magnetic recording material on member 4 into contact with heads 31. To allow air entering recess 3 to escape member 4 is left free at its inner edge or alternatively vents are formed in member 4 or disc 2. Instead of applying air under pressure to duct 27 air may be sucked into recess 3 through scoops positioned round the periphery of disc 1.
