Abstract

114,145. Cross, M. O. March 3, 1917, [Convention date]. Gear-cutting.-In a gear tooth rounding machine, the rotating cutter 37 is given a lateral movement in a semi-circular path round the end of the tooth on the wheel 57, which is then withdrawn, indexed, and returned to position as follows, the cutter spindle being meanwhile also returned to its initial position. The gear 57 is mounted on a spindle 54, the tapered end 51 of which fits in a revoluble bush having a ratchet wheel 58 at its upper end and mounted in a supporting head 14 adjustably fixed to the table 12, moved back and returned at the right times by a cam 24, lever 26, shaft 27, levers 17, and links 16. As the table moves, it operates a lever 62, through a link 64, and causes it to engage with adjustable stops 63 on a pawl bar 61, thus causing the wheel 57 to be turned to present the next tooth for rounding. Meanwhile the cutter spindle 35, mounted in a housing 34, eccentrically adjustable in a revolving holder 32, is returned to the initial position of its semi-circular path, and afterwards given a slow working feed, by a cam 46, which revolves the holder 32 through the medium of a rack 44, and gears 43, 42, 41. The tooth to be rounded is held firmly in position by a sector carried on an arm 66 adjustably fixed to the tool support 30. A spring-pressed brake pad 53 prevents too easy movement of the bush carrying the spindle 51. The table 12 slides on a table 5, vertically adjustable through a screw 6 operated by gears 8, 9, and a shaft 10.
